I spent this time between Christmas and New Year's reading and reflecting on the Eight Pillars of Joy that these two spiritual leaders came up with and it has been profoundly impactful. Now my intention is to put them into practice and I would love to invite you to come along with me. For the next 8 weeks I am going to unpack each of the Eight Pillars of Joy and create tools to practice them.

Often times yoga is translated to mean union or ‘we are all one’. If you believe this and want to practice this I would like to invite you to join me in a little svadyaya (self-study). How am I showing up for my community? How am I showing up for those who are being harassed, oppressed, detained, abused, stripped of their access to basic needs? How am I showing up for those who do not have a roof over their head or enough food to eat? How am I showing up?

But, today I have more energy. I feel much more clear. I am complain less. I am more compassionate and less judgmental (towards myself and others). I feel alive. I feel like myself. I feel like I am living on purpose.

THIS is the reason I teach yoga. This is the reason why I train teachers to teach with a trauma-informed perspective and understand how trauma lives in the body. So that those who have experienced oppression and trauma have tools and those that have the capacity and the privilege to disrupt the systems of oppression can do so effectively.

Getting pregnant and then giving birth was scary because of the lack of control I would have. I am not sure there is a place where I have ever been more vulnerable than the day I gave birth to my sweet Luisa. When I started feeling contractions I was so afraid. I was only 33 weeks pregnant and up in the mountains with my partner for a little babymoon. My biggest fear was that there was something wrong with her. After two miscarriages I was hypersensitive to anything that didn’t seem ‘normal’.

I have compiled a list of postures that are especially beneficial during pregnancy. Of, course there are many other postures that may feel good, these are just a few that I found to be helpful in relieving the common ailments during my own pregnancy.
