“We will not go back to normal. Normal never was. Our pre-corona existence was never normal other than we normalized greed, inequity, exhaustion, depletion, extraction, disconnection, confusion, rage, hoarding, hate and lack. We should not long to return, My friends. We are being given the opportunity to stitch a new garment. One that fits all of humanity and nature.”--Sonya Renee Taylor

I have come back to this quote many times over the past 10 months. It hits me every single time.

Sonya Renee Taylor’s work is ground breaking and it has led me to look at the body through a completely new lens. Read her book The Body is Not an Apology and prepare to get your mind blown and your heart broken open.

The current state of our world, more specifically our nation (the U.S.) is very volatile. Nothing is certain except uncertainty. The combination of all that we have faced in 2020 has left many of us overwhelmed. Exhausted. Depleted. Devastated.

And hopeful.

Like the quote says we are being given an opportunity to stitch a new garment. One that fits all of humanity.

Close your eyes. Imagine a world where everyone belongs. Imagine a world where we are all free to be exactly who we are, where everyone’s basic needs are met and all of our kids are given the opportunity to thrive.

Imagine.

For this world to exist it will require those of us who are committed to this world to stay engaged in our own internal work as well as actively working to disrupt the systems that are designed to keep us separate.

This will require resilience. It will require each of us to get and stay uncomfortable. To build our capacity to cope with uncertainty. To cope with the unknown.

Here are some really simple tips to build resilience:

Physical Resilience:

  • Move your body. Don’t overthink it. Just move.
  • Nourish your body with the foods that give you life, energy, and vitality. You get to decide what those foods are.

Emotional Resilience:

  • Practice the 8 pillars of joy: acceptance, perspective, humor, humility, compassion, gratitude, generosity, forgiveness
  • Allow yourself to feel your feelings as they arise

Physiological Resilience:

  • Sleep, sleep, sleep
  • Tap into your breath
  • Learn how to self-regulate your nervous system

Spiritual Resilience:

  • Pray
  • Meditate
  • Connect to something bigger than yourself

Let’s stay engaged together and stitch a new garment. One that fits all of humanity.

I’d love to connect! Come into my DMs share how you are building resilience with me on Instagram.

Self-Care as an Act of Resistance

Loving and caring for ourselves is necessary for us to stay engaged and on the path towards becoming the truest, highest expression of who we are. Loving and caring for our bodies supports our wellbeing. Behaviors, rituals, and daily habits that keep us healthy and thriving are an act of resistance.

Embrace Rest

Choose to schedule in time to rest. This simple act of self-care is one way to show resistance to a culture of productivity, perfectionism, and shoulds that is harming so many of us.
